A Principal Entity is your business as registered on India's DLT platform- the accountable identity that every header and template you use is registered under. Here's how to register yours correctly, with the real document lists and timelines.

The Principal Entity (PE) is your business- the brand whose name appears on the SMS, whose product or service is being communicated, and who is ultimately responsible for the content. When you register on a DLT platform like Airtel, Jio, or Vodafone Idea as an enterprise, you become a Principal Entity. Your PE registration covers your legal entity identity (verified against GST/incorporation documents), the headers (Sender IDs) registered under your brand, and the message templates approved for your use cases.
The PE is accountable. If your campaigns generate spam complaints or violate TRAI guidelines, it is your entity registration that is at risk- not your SMS provider's.
TRAI introduced the DLT framework to combat spam and SMS fraud that had reached crisis levels in India- billions of unsolicited commercial messages were being sent every year with no way to trace the sender. Since 2021, every commercial SMS must pass through a verified four-link chain, stored on a distributed ledger that any telecom operator can check in real time.
Your business- must be registered
Your SMS service provider- must be registered
The 6-character sender ID- must be registered under your entity
The message content- must be pre-approved
Every link in this chain must be registered, approved, and correctly connected. If any link is missing, the message is blocked at the network level before it reaches the recipient- no exceptions, regardless of how the sending platform is configured.
You only need to register on one platform- Vodafone Idea (Vilpower), Airtel, Jio, BSNL, Tata Communications, or Videocon/ACT. Registration on any one is valid across all telecom operators, so pick whichever interface you find easiest to work with.
Private Limited/LLP/Partnership entities need GST certificate, PAN, Certificate of Incorporation, authorised signatory ID, and an authorisation letter or board resolution. Sole proprietorships need a GST or Shop Establishment Certificate plus the proprietor's PAN and Aadhaar. See the full breakdown below.
On your chosen platform, look for "New Registration" or "Register as Enterprise/Principal Entity." Enter your legal entity name exactly as it appears on your GST certificate, entity type, PAN, GST number, registered address, and authorised signatory details, then upload your documents and submit.
Approval typically takes 1-3 business days. If your submission is rejected, the platform will indicate which document or field needs correction- a mismatch with your GST certificate is the most common cause.
Once your entity is approved, your SMS provider's Telemarketer ID needs to be bound to your account before any message can be delivered- an approved entity alone doesn't authorise sending. Read the PE-TM Binding Chain Guide.
With your entity approved, register your Sender IDs and get your message templates approved- both happen under your Principal Entity and are required before campaigns can go live. See Sender ID & Template Registration.

Most delays trace back to a small set of avoidable issues- checking for these before you submit saves a resubmission cycle.
Your DLT registration is valid across every telecom operator once approved on any one platform. Registering separately on two or three platforms wastes time and creates duplicate entities to manage for no compliance benefit.
Authorised signatory Aadhaar/PAN and an authorisation letter or board resolution are required for companies, LLPs, and partnerships. Submitting without them- or with a signatory who doesn't match your GST records- is a common cause of rejection.
An approved entity, with approved headers and templates, still can't send a single message until your SMS provider's Telemarketer ID is bound to your account. This is the step most businesses forget after the entity gets approved.
The legal entity name on your DLT registration must match your GST certificate exactly- even a difference like "Pvt. Ltd." versus "Private Limited" can cause rejection or delay.
