What is the WhatsApp Business Calling API?
The WhatsApp Business Calling API lets a business make and receive WhatsApp voice calls on the same number it uses for WhatsApp Business API messaging. Calls run over the internet inside WhatsApp, so customers don't need to switch to a regular phone call.
There are two directions. User-initiated calls let a customer tap the call button in your chat or a call button in a message. Business-initiated calls let you call a customer, but only after the customer has granted call permission, which you request through a message.
Calls are handled through Meta's APIs and webhooks, and connected to your agents through a calling or contact-centre system. Meta rolls out calling by region and account type, so availability for your number is confirmed during onboarding.
How a WhatsApp business call works
Enable calling on your business number
Calling is switched on for the phone number in your WhatsApp Business account, with call hours and settings configured.
Customer calls, or you request permission
Customers can call from the chat. To call a customer, you first send a call permission request they can accept.
Webhooks signal the call
Your system receives call events through webhooks and connects the call to an available agent or IVR flow.
Continue in chat
After the call, follow up in the same WhatsApp conversation with a summary, link, or next step.
What the Calling API supports
User-initiated calls
Customers call your business from the WhatsApp chat or from a call button in a message.
Business-initiated calls
Call customers who have accepted a call permission request, for follow-ups and callbacks.
Webhooks & signalling
Call events arrive through webhooks so your system can route, answer, and log every call.
Where WhatsApp calling helps
Support escalation
Move a complex chat to a voice call without asking the customer to dial a different number.
Sales callbacks
Let interested leads request a call from a WhatsApp ad or message, then call them back on WhatsApp.
Trusted caller identity
Calls come from your verified WhatsApp business profile, which customers recognise from the chat.
Lower calling friction
Customers already in WhatsApp can call with one tap, including over Wi-Fi.

WhatsApp calling happens inside the WhatsApp app over the internet, from your verified business profile. IVR and cloud telephony use regular phone numbers and the mobile network. Many businesses use both- regular numbers for reach, WhatsApp calling for customers already chatting with them.
